What is on the sheet

One cat face, 132 by 112 mm, fills the template, ready to color and wear. It has two pointed ears with inner ear shapes, two oval eye holes labeled cut out, round cheek spots, four whisker lines, a half-moon nose and a curved mouth, plus a small circle near each side edge for elastic. The eye holes line up with a child’s eyes only at 100 percent, so switch off fit to page when printing the A4 or US Letter PDF. The sheet is tagged for ages 3 to 5.

What you need

The printed sheet, ideally on cardstock, plus crayons or markers, safety scissors, small sharp scissors for the adult, a hole punch and round elastic or ribbon.

How the legend works

A key at the bottom shows a solid line for cut and a gray line for the parts to color, not cut. The mask has no folds or glue tabs. Three numbered steps say to color and cut the outer line, cut the eye holes with grown-up help, then punch the side holes and tie on elastic.

Parties and classrooms

For a birthday, set the masks out on a table as guests arrive and let each child decorate one before the games start. Teachers use them for animal role play, Halloween parades and story retellings.

How to assemble

  1. Color with crayons or markers before any cutting starts, while the paper is flat.
  2. Make the inner ears and cheeks pink and leave the rest of the face for stripes or patches.
  3. Fold the paper gently across an eye oval to start the cut without stabbing the sheet.
  4. Reinforce each side hole with a small piece of clear tape before punching.
  5. Use round elastic about 30 cm long and adjust the knot on the child's head.

Frequently asked questions

What size will the cat mask be?

The template measures 132 by 112 mm, which covers the upper face of a child aged about 3 to 7. There is one mask per page, so print one sheet for each child.

Any ideas for coloring the cat?

Pink inner ears and cheeks, then stripes or patches on the rest of the face. Color before any cutting starts, while the paper is still flat.

Which parts should a grown-up do?

An adult should cut the two eye ovals and punch the side holes. Young children can color the face and cut the outer line with safety scissors.

What can I use instead of elastic?

Ribbon or yarn tied behind the head works well. You can also tape a craft stick to one side and hold the mask up by hand.
