Choose a level

Into the stem and the leaf

This pumpkin maze climbs right up into the bent stem and the pointed leaf. The walls step along just inside the round edge in small squares and carry on into both. The curly vine beside the stem is only a plain line. No face is drawn in, so the corridors stay clear and easy to read. Two arrows just outside the outline mark where to begin and end, each joined to the maze by a short channel, and the line from one to the other may not cross a wall.

Three sizes of path

The easy pumpkin’s route uses 49 of its 100 wide cells, which are 12 mm across, for ages 3 to 5. It enters on the right side a little below the middle, climbs through the upper right, crosses below the stem and runs down the left side to leave below the bottom, left of center.

The medium pumpkin has 237 cells of 8 mm for ages 6 to 8, and a route of 79. That one starts above the top, right of the stem. It heads left up into the leaf, runs down the left side and crosses the bottom before ending outside the right side.

The hard pumpkin is narrowest of the three, with 520 cells of 5.5 mm for ages 9 to 12. Its 132-cell route enters on the left side above the middle and drops into the lower left. Then it climbs back up, zigzags across the upper half to just below the stem and steps down along the upper right edge, leaving outside the right side at the same height it went in. Both the 8 mm medium corridors and these 5.5 mm ones get narrower under fit to page, so the A4 or US Letter file is best printed at 100 percent.

A calm Halloween activity

Mazes need nothing but a pencil. They work at a party table, on a rainy October afternoon or as morning work in class. Each PDF includes an answer key on page 2.

Skills practiced & tips

  1. Point to Start and Finish before picking up a pencil.
  2. Start sits on the right side on the easy page, on top of the pumpkin to the right of the stem on the medium page and on the left side on the hard page, so find it first.
  3. If a path ends, back up to the last choice and try another way.
  4. Draw the line in pencil so a wrong turn can be erased.
  5. When the maze is solved, add a jack-o'-lantern face and color the pumpkin.

Frequently asked questions

Do the corridors climb into the stem and the leaf?

Yes. The walls step along just inside the round edge and carry on into both, and on the 237-cell medium maze the 79-cell route heads left up into the leaf. The curly vine beside the stem is only a plain line.

Is the medium pumpkin right for an eight-year-old?

Yes, it is set for ages 6 to 8, with 8 mm corridors. The easy pumpkin is for ages 3 to 5 and the hard one for ages 9 to 12.

Does Start move around the pumpkin?

Yes. It is outside the right side, a little below the middle, on the easy page, above the top and to the right of the stem on the medium page, and outside the left side, above the middle, on the hard page. Finish is below the bottom, left of center, on the easy page, outside the right side a little below the middle on the medium page, and outside the right side at the same height as Start on the hard page.

Is there a face on the pumpkin?

No. The face is left off so the corridors stay clear and easy to read. Once the maze is solved, a child can draw a jack-o'-lantern face on top and color the pumpkin.

Can I check the answer?

Yes. Page 2 of every PDF shows the solution path, so a parent or teacher can check the route quickly.
