Choose a level

With its wings open wide, this butterfly dot to dot is joined around its outside edge only, so the spots, the body and the antennae inside stay clean for coloring. The easy level has 30 dots for ages 3 to 5, the medium level 44 for ages 6 to 8 and the hard level 62 for ages 9 to 12. All three draw the same butterfly.

Over the head and around the wings

The orange Start star sits at the top of the left upper wing. The numbers head right along that wing, dip in to the head, loop over it and run out across the other upper wing. Then they go down the outer edge, around one lower wing, in to the small tip of the body, around the second lower wing and back up to the star.

Spots to color

Light gray shapes are already printed on every page: the antennae, eyes, smile, the long body, the lines between the upper and lower wings and eight round spots. That is why the butterfly shows up early. Once the outline is closed, each spot can take its own color, or a pattern. The hard page packs extra dots around the head and into the inner corners of the wings. Near the head they only stay readable when the A4 or Letter file prints at 100 percent. Every level also has an answer page showing the finished outline.

Skills practiced & tips

  1. Point to the orange Start star at the top of the left upper wing before your child begins.
  2. Say each number out loud before drawing to the next dot.
  3. On the 62-dot page, watch the numbers near the head, where several dots sit close together.
  4. Once the outline is joined, color each gray wing spot a different color.
  5. Use a pencil so a wrong line can be erased.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the 62-dot butterfly need a closer look at the head?

The hard page packs extra dots around the head and into the inner corners of the wings, so several numbers sit close together there. The easy page has 30 dots for ages 3 to 5 and the medium page 44 for ages 6 to 8, with the same butterfly on each.

What is already drawn inside the wings?

On every page the lines between the upper and lower wings are printed in light gray, along with the antennae, the eyes, the smile, the long body and eight round spots. That leaves only the outside edge to join, and it helps a child see the butterfly early.

Where does the counting start?

Look for the orange star marked Start. On every level it sits at the top of the left upper wing, and the numbers head right along that wing toward the head.

Are the wing spots part of the dot path?

No. The eight round spots are printed in light gray on every page, so they are ready to color, each in a different color if your child likes, once the outline is closed.
